"Prosper & Be In Health" by Dr Leader
PROSPER AND BE IN HEALTH
A Life Perspective
2nd Edition
David A. Leader, D.C.
This book is dedicated to all those individuals who wish to grow beyond the limitations of understanding they have been living under; to those who, in spite of their sincere efforts to attain health, in spite of their faith and goodness, still have not experienced “Truth-Fulfilled” in their daily lives.
There is a deliberate effort to align the information in this book with the Word of God as found in both the Old and New Testaments as this is what I believe to be the ultimate Truth regarding our existence.
This work is an attempt to coalesce the accumulated knowledge and clinical experience of myself and many other health practitioners and researchers whose approaches differ from the mainstream, allopathic paradigm.
My training and clinical experience has led me to integrate the following techniques into my practice: German New Medicine for identifying and treating underlying emotional conflicts and trauma along with the practice of clinical nutrition for identifying and treating toxicities and deficiencies. In addition, chiropractic care and physical modalities are employed to address imbalances in the nervous system and musculoskeletal systems.
This methodology is how I approach patients in my practice and may not be suitable for all practitioners or all patients. It is vital for the practitioner and the patient to be in agreement as to the course to be taken on the way to that patient’s well-being.
We are not born for pain or suffering, yet inevitably both will take place somewhere in our lives. This is a reality of life. Another reality is the fact that we do have a choice as to the extent to which these emotional and physical experiences affect us.
God Wants Us To Lead a Healthy and Prosperous Life
When I hear patients say to me, “Why did God let this happen to me?” or “ Why did God take this person from me?” or “If there was a God of Mercy, He wouldn’t make illness and suffering” , I feel sorry for that person for going through life under the lie that God would want anything for us other than health, joy and prosperity.
This kind of thinking is born out of a lack of knowledge of the Word of God which leads you to no other rational conclusion than: “God wants me to suffer” or that “God doesn’t care about me” or worse “there can’t possibly be a God with such suffering abounding in this world”.
I’m here to tell you that we were not designed to suffer emotionally and physically, but through our lack of knowledge and understanding, this is exactly what we allow to happen.
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” Hosea 4:6
“…If you will diligently listen to the voice of God, and do that which is right in his sight… I will put none of these diseases upon you… for I am the Lord that heals you.” Exodus 15:26
And Jesus said, “Beloved, I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2
So what is “…right in his sight” that leads to health of the body and prosperity of the soul? What “…lack of knowledge” destroys us; body and soul?
The answers to these questions are simple, yet their implications profound:
-offering Forgiveness rather than harboring bitterness, resentment, anger and hatred;
-having Faith instead of fear;
-knowing we are Worthy and Whole in the eyes of God rather than worthless and insignificant;
-being Thankful for what we have rather than always wanting more;
-Loving others and ourselves for what we are rather than what we are not.
It is through the resolution of our conflicts and tragedies by embracing these concepts that frees us from our past and present spiritual, mental and physical suffering.
There has always been a knowledge of this principle- that unresolved conflicts lead to physical illness- in past cultures, religions and healing paradigms. But for the first time, through the work of Dr. Ryke Geerd Hamer, a German Medical Doctor and Internist, we have a reproducible, scientific means of understanding the link between conflict and disease. Dr. Hamer refers to his work as the German New Medicine .
Through his research and observations utilizing brain CT scans, patient histories and patient interviews, Dr. Hamer has established certain Biological Natural Laws which help to explain how this process unfolds.
The First Biological Law states that at the onset of a serious, dramatic conflict shock, a Significant Biological Special Program is triggered on three levels: the Psyche – the Brain – the Organ
The Second Biological Law states that there are two phases to these Special Programs. At the onset of the conflict shock the body is in a heightened state of activity. Assuming the conflict is then resolved, the body goes into a relaxed healing state.
The Third Biological Law explains that the course of the so-called “disease” is determined by the type of tissue from which it is derived during its embryonic development. (All organs and tissues form out of three distinct tissue types when we are an embryo).
The Fourth Biological Law states that during the development of the “disease”, a simultaneous growth of microorganisms takes place to aid in the decomposition or tissue repair of the “diseased” area once resolution of the conflict is established; our own built-in surgeons. The type of microorganisms involved is dependent again upon which of the three embryonic layers the underlying tissue is derived.
The Fifth, and final, Biological Law is possibly the most important law. It indicates that nothing in nature is meaningless or “malignant”, as we have been taught. Rather, each conflict triggers a Significant Biological Special Program which assists the organism in resolving the actual conflict situation. In other words, we are designed with these “programs” to help us overcome the underlying trauma. Truly an incredible design!
Why, then, do so many suffer with long-term degenerative “diseases”. Why do some die from cancers, heart disease and the like? I go back to the verse from the Book of Hosea; we are “…destroyed by our lack of knowledge.” What we don’t know leads to our own demise; and that is this...
We MUST resolve our_conflicts and traumas before healing can take place. If we go through life “actively conflicted” (living in our anger, fear, self-devaluation, sorrow, abandonment, etc.) the “program” that was originally meant to help us overcome that trauma, continues to run until we “actively resolve” it. Then, and only then, will our body begin to heal itself.
Sadly, most of us were never aware of this vital morsel of knowledge. Many more, presented with this information, will deny its validity. But the healing, witnessed by the multitudes of individuals with mental and physical struggles in the past who have embraced this knowledge, speaks volumes to its validity.
Please understand: these principles, presented in scripture and verified by scientific endeavor, offer truth to those who are willing to implement them in their daily walk through life. This is not a philosophical exercise nor is it conjecture. This expression of truth has been accepted and put into practice with great success by tens of thousands of individuals.
When you are willing to become aware of the conflicts within your heart and mind, you have succeeded in taking the first step towards healing your body and renewing your spirit.
When we understand this principle- that conflicts/ traumas lead to physical changes and that these conflicts/ traumas must then be resolved in order to allow healing, everyday occurrences take on new meaning. Allergies, asthma, pains of unknown origin, autoimmune disorders, cancers- all are telling us that there is some conflict, some trauma that we must resolve. Sometimes these events are what we might consider to be slight, but non-the-less they must be confronted and resolved.
Each of these physical manifestations that we encounter are like warning signs- telling us of work that needs to done. This understanding forces us to take responsibility for our thoughts and our responses to daily occurrences. If we choose to incorporate this knowledge into our lives, we not only become healthier physically, but ultimately, we grow and mature spiritually as well.
Changing Our Pain Into Wisdom
We can all look back in our lives and remember moments of great despair, fear and loss. As we have already established, it is these events that cause “programs” to begin to run within our bodies- creating physiologic changes; what most would call “disease”. But what can we do at this point to get through the pain, conflict and shock to allow healing - both emotionally and physically?
The answer lies within the way we perceive the pain. That is, we must change our perspective from that of pain, loss, fear or anger into wisdom.
Let us first realize that pain, loss and the like are at one end of the “Conflict Spectrum”- the onset, and wisdom is at the other end of the “Conflict Spectrum”- or resolution. Pain, loss, anger and fear are our initial chemical, emotional response at the onset of a shock trauma. Wisdom is the healed and resolved expression of that same shock trauma. We change pain into wisdom by finding new meaning in that painful experience.
Forgiveness, Blessings, Prayer, Empathy, Understanding and finding Beauty are the tools we use to impart that change.
Though we cannot undo the hurt we have experienced, we do have the power to change what that hurt means to us.
By doing this, we open the door of possibility to a healing resolution in spite of the painful memory.
Fear
Fear represents that which is not hoped for; the opposite of faith. Fear projects into the future, but is always rooted in events from your past.
Fear manifests itself in a variety of ways- fear of loss, fear of abandonment, fear of pain or illness, fear of death for ourselves or others, fear of rejection and so on. Fear also manifests itself physically in a great many ways depending on how our minds perceive the conflict or trauma.
At this point, it is vital to differentiate between what may be termed "biological fear" versus "perceived fear". When confronted, for instance, with a burglar breaking into our home in the middle of the night, our biological response is one of fear. This biological fear response triggers heightened physical responses which allow our body to confront this unexpected threat, thus increasing our chances for survival. This is often termed the "fight-or-flight" response. This adaptation may manifest in a wide variety of physical responses.
An example of this may include- the widening of our coronary arteries, allowing for greater blood flow to the heart, which enhances our capacity to fight-off our attacker. This form of fear, again, is welcome and is not the type of fear which could be, or should be negated or controlled. Once this conflict or threat is vanquished, our heightened response is allowed to abate and our adaptations (in this case- widened coronary arteries) pass on into healing.
The flip-side to this type of beneficial biological fear and its subsequent healing is that which potentially happens next- "perceived fear".
In this scenario of an intruder in our home, we have successfuly ended the real physical threat. But as is often the case, the perceived threat continues every night as we attempt to go to sleep only to awaken at the slightest sound in our home. This is "perceived fear" which, if left unresolved, creates a condition called a "hanging healing". This hanging healing means that your mind and body have not been able to fully resolve the initial conflict, creating an ongoing heightened response which does not allow full healing to take place. Hanging healings are responsible for our so-called "chronic" health conditions.
It is here where we need to engage our minds and spirits to allow resolution to begin. To do so requires us to understand the context of our psychological responses. That is to say, why we perceive our conflicts and traumas in the way that we do.
In the midst of our early development as children, we are exposed to a great many psychological primers, primarily by observation of our parents but also to a lesser extent, our teachers, friends, relatives, etc. The responses of those whom we observe as well as our own responses are bathed in and shaped by our culural and social mores, religious beliefs and personal experiences.
Through observing and identifying with the influential personalities in our lives and their associated responses to the varying challenges in life along with our social and religious belief systems that we begin to establish our own identities and responses. The dynamics of this process ultimately shape how we psychologically and therefore physically react to our conflicts and traumas.
In contrast to our beneficial biological fear response, perceived fear, or irrational fear, distracts us from the truth; that is, that there are blessings we were meant to enjoy in this life- namely, gifts of hope, joy, empathy, understanding and love that are within us to help us grow and mature.
Most of us would never admit to the presence of this type of fear in our hearts, as this is generally regarded as a sign of weakness or a lack of faith. But if there are certain “chronic” physical challenges present , chances are that there is fear present as well. This does not indicate weakness or a lack of faith, but rather, a lack of understanding. And any lack of understanding can be remedied by a thorough evaluation of one’s conflicts and traumas. This, then reveals the work that needs to be done.
By knowing the type of physical responses that are present (what we have erroneously been taught was "disease"), we can then, through the research of Dr. Hamer, be certain as to the type of conflict or trauma involved. With the knowledge of which specific type of conflict is present, it does not take too long before the individual's underlying issue is identified. From here, the responsibility is the patient’s.
Many individuals may beleive that they are unable or not empowered to do anything about their situation. Here again, encouragement, understanding of our true biology and adequate reinforcement can lead the individual into gaining control over their own well-being.
With diligence, compassion and the knowledge of how we were designed, perceived or irrational fear, along with all detrimental emotions cannot hold power over our communion with truth.
“God has not given us a spirit of fear – but of power, love and a sound mind”. 2 Timothy 1:7
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:18
Forgiveness
“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” Mark 11:25
The first necessity for forgiveness derives from the Law. Until forgiveness is affected in the heart, the law of reaping and sowing reaches its inevitable conclusion- mental, spiritual and physical “disease” or, more accurately, as we now know- "hanging healing". The legality of the universe demands resolution. Nothing can stop the continuation of a hanging healing in many scenarios except forgiveness, either of one's self or the one who purposely or by accident hurt us. Anger, loss, hurt and hatred will perpetuate the hanging healing regardless of your will-power or kind nature. Forgiveness is the only way to elicit healthy change.
If we are in conflict with one another and fail or refuse to forgive the other person, the true problem lies not with the one who committed the wrong, but with us -for failing to forgive the one who offended us.
If we are unwilling to forgive another for their offense, the roots of bitterness begin to get a foothold. From here we keep a record of wrongs against us leading to resentment, anger and hatred.
The greatest difficulty concerning forgiveness is that most often we don’t know that we still harbor resentment, anger or hatred, or have lied to ourselves and forgotten. The key to knowing whether real forgiveness has taken place or if hidden bitterness is present lies with the hanging healing itself; the presence of which is the indicator of the presence of unforgiveness.
As with all unresolved conflicts, the more intense the conflict and the longer we leave it unresolved, the more intense and the longer – lasting the “disease”.
To forgive means that you are giving up the right of retribution for an insult; you are pardoning the person for their insult. What you are not doing is giving credence or support to the act that they committed. The difference, then, is that we are to separate the person from the act; pardoning the person but not the act itself.
Resolution of a conflict that you have with another does not mean you must resolve it in-person, however. You stand alone in your deliverance from unforgiveness; as is the case with all unresolved conflicts. The reward for forgiving one of their offense does not come from the one who offended you.
It is the act of forgiveness, in –and-of-itself, that releases you from the bondage of bitterness, anger and hatred.
“First go and be reconciled to your brother…” Matthew 5:23
“Settle matters quickly with your adversary…” Matthew 5:25
“Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me. Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” Matthew 18:21
Blessings
The next step beyond forgiveness requires us to bless those who have hurt us. We are actually calling upon God to grant divine care and prosperity upon the one who hurt us. As difficult as this may seem, this action separates us from our anger, sorrow and pain, even if only for a moment. The important point to this is that for that brief moment of forgiveness, of asking for blessing upon the origin of our pain, we allow something new to occupy our heart and mind.
That something new is called “beauty”.
“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven…” Psalm 32:1
“If anyone has caused grief…you ought to forgive and comfort (Bless) him, so that he will not be overwhelmed in sorrow.” 2 Corinthians 2:5
Beauty
Beauty exists in all things, regardless of how we outwardly see or interpret them. All of creation was created without blemish and expresses divine beauty.
Beauty can be described as the feeling we have within our heart, mind and soul regarding an object, person or experience.
Through our ability to find beauty in the “ugliest” of situations, we may briefly allow new meaning to our pain. In this way, beauty can be the catalyst which brings a new perspective to our pain.
As with forgiveness and offering blessings, finding beauty within life’s darkest moments requires us to actively engage our heart and mind to find beauty; we must be willing to invite it into our lives.
“And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” Genesis 1:31
“…beauty should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” 1 Peter 3:4
In review, virtually all so-called “disease” does, in fact, originate from a dramatic, unexpected and isolating conflict shock that occurs simultaneously on three levels: Psyche - Brain - Organ.
These “diseases” are not “meaningless” or “malignant” as we have been taught. Each of these conflicts that catches us off guard triggers a Significant Biological Special Program (SBS) which assists the organism in resolving the actual conflict situation.
The key to recovering from these conflicts and their associated physical characteristics (symptoms/ diseases) is two-fold:
*Resolving the conflict on the psychological level
*Allowing the physical body to proceed with healing.
Identification of the psychological conflict and subsequent techniques of resolving these conflicts will ultimately allow the body to enter into the healing phase.
The physical aspects of this healing phase are accomplished by clearing obstacles to healing - such as toxicities, deficiencies and musculoskeletal dysfunctions. These subjects will be discussed in detail in future pages.
As stated previously, the first key to recovering from these conflict shocks is to resolve the original psychological conflict. This is not always a simple matter, as many of these biological programs are difficult to “turn off” once they have been “running” for years, sometimes since birth or early childhood and have become engrained into our identity and personality.
In an attempt to resolve such conflicts, a number of techniques can be employed which aid the mind to self-regulate; that is to say - process these conflict shocks to resolution.
Prayer and Meditation
“…meditate on it day and night…Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8
“…whatever is true,…noble,…right,…pure,…lovely,…admirable,…praiseworthy- meditate on such things.” Philippians 4:8
Prayer and meditation on subjects such as forgiveness, fear, courage, blessings, gratitude, beauty, etc. help to provide us with understanding and new perspectives regarding our present spiritual or emotional condition. This practice nourishes us with understanding of God’s revealed truth; not some hidden or secret truth- as is the case with many of today’s esoteric, “new age” meditation practices.
Though I am not a theologian, I do, however, believe it to be important for our prayer and meditation practices to be focused on revealing truth regarding our fears, pain, unforgiveness, etc. rather than asking for our fears, pain, etc. to be taken away or healed. The purpose of prayer and meditation is to reveal the truth so that we may gain wisdom and ultimately, out of this experience… grow.
We are already empowered by the presence of the Holy Spirit with the knowledge and power to “move mountains”.
For some of us, either because of our age or some mental or physical barrier, the ability to meditate is a difficult endeavor. Assistance for these individuals is now available.
Brainwave Entrainment Therapy
The brain is a massive source of electromagnetic signals that get transmitted throughout the body via the nervous system. These brainwaves vary greatly in frequencies (measured in Hertz or cycles per second) and can be measured on an EEG (electroencephalograph).
These frequencies vary according to our state of consciousness (ie: alert, at rest or asleep) and are linked to our behavior, learning , focus, decision-making, calmness, creativity, introspection, sleep and so on.
Brainwave entrainment is the process of using subsonic (inaudible ) frequencies, usually buried in an audio recording, that are “heard” in the brain itself causing the brainwaves to follow this desired frequency while increasing communication between the two sides of the brain. This “training” of the brainwaves dramatically increases insight and self-awareness thus enabling the brain to process old conflicts and painful experiences, until finally, the conflict is resolved.
Throughout the duration of brainwave entrainment therapy, ever-decreasing frequencies will be utilized in order to allow for deeper and more insightful conflict resolution; much like slowly pealing off the layers of an onion.
Seeking counsel
Whether it is done with the guidance of a professional counselor, a caring and insightful friend or family member or with your healthcare provider, discussions regarding your plight and its associated emotions offer an effective approach to resolving one’s conflict.
An important note regarding counseling: the person or persons with whom you share and discuss your painful experience should stay focused on that experience and its associated emotions. It is not necessarily productive or wise to move beyond this specific subject matter.
At this point it should also be noted that a definitive diagnosis is essential to ensure that you are “working on” the proper conflict associated with your physical or mental “disorder”. By diagnosis I mean, an accurate assessment of the root conflict or trauma resulting in the mental or physical “illness” involved. This can only be accomplished by someone who is thoroughly trained in the practice of the German New Medicine. Again, straying from the pertinent conflict becomes counter-productive to resolving the underlying emotional trauma and its physical manifestations.
Keeping a Diary or Journal
Another useful tool in your effort to resolve painful experiences is the implementation of a daily writing practice. Writing about your perspectives, evaluations and revelations regarding your conflict, on a daily basis, helps to guide your mind in the direction of resolution. Any thoughts you have that incorporate some aspect of your plight can be helpful in the ongoing process of understanding and bringing to a close the conflicts within yourself.
These perspectives may include forgiveness, blessings and beauty but also gratitude and the looking forward to better times of wholeness. Any subject that resonates with you or that somehow ties in with the underlying conflict or trauma should be thought of as important.
As you begin to implement these varying techniques into your daily healing, you will invariably begin to notice random moments of revelation throughout the day; what I refer to as little “aha” moments. These are those times when you will come to understanding regarding different aspects of the original conflict or why you perceived that conflict as especially traumatic. It is within these small but profound breakthroughs that you will begin to enjoy healing. Seldom, in my experience, does healing come with one fell swoop of understanding or self-awareness.
The techniques described here are those that I use at present in my practice. It is, by no means, an exhaustive list of possibilities. Every, and any, modality than works in unison with the mind and body’s natural processes towards healing is welcome. Care must be taken, however, when choosing modalities that seem to bypass normal progressions of healing; such as techniques that claim to rapidly eliminate emotional traumas without the individual having to confront and resolve their conflicts. Such techniques do a disservice to the patient by instilling false hope and the belief that they need not deal with their unforgiveness, anger, fear, etc. The use of certain herbal, nutritional and pharmaceutical agents can be helpful at specific phases of healing, but become a hinderance during other phases. Clarification can be offered by those trained in the discipline of German New Medicine.
When you become aware of and are willing to acknowledge the presence of the conflicts within you, you have succeeded in taking the first step towards healing.
The gentle resolution of psychological conflict shocks along with nutritional and chiropractic/ physical modes of healing empower the body to reach its ultimate goals:
Spiritual, Emotional & Physical Health.
Strategies for resolving one’s conflicts and traumas will slowly, and occasionally quickly, allow the body to begin to heal.
The capacity for physical healing is therefore limited by the extent to which we have resolved our conflicts and traumas. In addition, our capacity to heal physically is greatly influenced by a number of chemical and physical parameters. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
1-our nutritional status; specifically- deficiencies of the essential nutrients necessary for the repair of the effected tissues
2-stored toxicities; chemical, mineral and food-based compounds ubiquitous in our food, air and water
3-physical limitations; as found in the nervous and musculoskeletal systems
4-sleep; essential for the normal repair mechanisms to work efficiently and for maintaining energy reserves
Protocols and techniques employed to address each of these parameters eases the burden of healing and can greatly reduce the “crisis” so often associated with healing.
Nutritional influences on the Healing Response
The foods we eat do much more than simply supply fuel for energy production. They provide raw materials and nutrients essential for the repair and maintenance of tissues, bolstering or suppressing the healing response and influencing our body composition.
Recent research into the affects of nutrition on health have changed our once overly simplistic understanding. Among these findings are:
The intake of manmade, processed foods and food additives interfere with healing and can lead to issues of toxicity within organs and tissues.
Not all fats are bad for us; in fact, most naturally-occurring fats actually help to combat degeneration and promote healing.
The amount and types of carbohydrates (sugars) we ingest have a powerful effect on our weight and overall health.
Genetically engineered foods (GMO) pose serious and well-documented health risks to humans and animals.
Those practices that influence our cells’ internal environment (or biological terrain); such as toxicity, pH (acid-alkaline balance), energy production, etc. have profound impact upon our ability to heal and maintain health.
The purpose of this section is not to delve too deep into the many approaches to diet that are being implemented today, but rather, to offer insights into those aspects of nutrition that interfere with our healing response.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Nutritional deficiencies are the result of receiving low amounts of minerals, vitamins and certain nutrients that are essential to life. These substances cannot be produced within the body and therefore must be supplied by the diet.
Minerals are critical for producing energy, nerve function, muscle contraction, hormonal balance, immune function, bone maintenance, powering enzyme systems, blood cell formation, reproduction and pH balance. Due to over farming and other poor agricultural practices, the mineral content of our soil and therefore our food supply is below levels necessary to sustain health. As a result, supplementation of minerals insures adequate intake of these essential nutrients.
Supplying the body with these nutrients depends upon how easily they can be delivered to their target organ or system. Two major barriers exist which limit the availability of minerals; delivering minerals from the intestinal tract into the blood stream (absorption) as well as transporting them inside the cell for utilization (bioavailability).
Some forms of minerals are more absorbable than others. Inorganic minerals salts are poorly absorbed. This is the form found in most over-the-counter type minerals because they are inexpensive to produce. Colloidal or rare earth minerals have gained popularity but are poorly absorbed, contain very small amounts of the essential minerals and contain toxic heavy metals.
The movement of most minerals across the intestinal wall and into bloodstream requires chelation. Chelation means to bind a mineral with an amino acid or protein. This structure protects the mineral from entering into unwanted chemical reactions. A chelated mineral therefore allows easy transport through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream as well as easy transport into the cell which results in maximal metabolism of that mineral.
Some chelating agents such as vitamin C (ascorbates), citric acid (citrates), Krebs cycle chelates and gluconates form bonds that are too weak and end up being broken down in the stomach acid. As a result, they have no benefit and end up being about as easily absorbed as inorganic salts.
Since mineral supplements are taken on a long-term basis, safety is also a consideration. LD-50 studies of chelated minerals show them to be substantially less toxic than mineral salts. Because of this fact, amino acid chelates are generally tolerated better than other forms of minerals.
B vitamins are a family of water-soluble nutrients; each with its own role in maintaining the health of the cell. The modern refined diet of nutrient-depleted foods combined with today’s hectic lifestyles leads to daily intake levels well below what is necessary to maintain health. The individual B vitamins are essential for the production of energy in each cell of the body, converting our proteins, fats and carbohydrates into fuel and metabolizing that fuel. B vitamins are also necessary for supporting brain and nervous system function and repair, blood cell formation, bone repair and maintenance, numerous enzymatic reactions and hormone synthesis. They support the integrity and growth of hair and skin and aid the liver with its ongoing task of detoxification.
When choosing which type of B vitamins to use, be aware that there are different forms of these nutrients. Co-enzyme or “activated” forms of B vitamins are the predominant form found in serum (blood) and the form preferred by our cells. In this co-enzyme form, B vitamins are generally better tolerated than the typical over-the-counter vitamins.
Antioxidants are compounds found in nature which scavenge free radicals in our bodies thus protecting our cells from oxidative damage (rapid aging). Specifically, antioxidants have been found to support the body’s defense system, protect visual acuity, aid liver detoxification, protect the lungs, eyes, blood vessels, organs, nervous tissue and skin from free radical damage, support bone repair and maintenance, aid in blood cell formation and protect the cells of diabetics from accelerated degeneration.
When purchasing antioxidants, be sure to seek products with a full-spectrum of antioxidants. For instance, you don’t want a supplement with beta carotene by itself; search for one with a blend of carotenoids. Another example is vitamin E; a product with only alpha tocopherol is limited, but one with a blend of tocopherols is more complete and is identical to the way they are found in whole foods. Research suggests that antioxidants in these forms offer more effective protection from oxidative damage.
You are what you eat- more accurately, you are what you absorb and assimilate. In our society of overly-processed, overly-cooked, pasteurized foods, antibiotics, food-borne bacteria and environmental toxicity, what we absorb and assimilate is not necessarily fulfilling our body’s nutritional demands.
In response to these dilemmas of digestive health, a combination of digestive enzymes and probiotics (beneficial bacteria) provide help.
Probiotics are soil-based organisms; bacteria that are naturally- occurring in the soil, but are also normally found in the healthy intestinal tract. Our intestines generally are home to over three pounds of various strains of beneficial bacteria known as “gut flora”. When the balance of this flora is upset by external influence such as poor diet, processed foods, food-borne bacteria, antibiotics, birth control pills, environmental toxicity, etc., our body can react in a number of undesirable ways. Our digestion and assimilation of nutrients can suffer, our immunity can deteriorate and our healing capacity can become compromised. The job of probiotics is to repopulate the gut with beneficial organisms.
Some documented benefits of using probiotics is an overall return to normal intestinal functioning when suffering with diarrhea, constipation, gas and bloating, yeast infections and harmful bacteria overgrowth and restoration of acid/ alkaline balance in the gut. Other benefits include an overall stimulation of the general immunity, protection of liver function by aiding elimination and metabolism of toxic loads on the digestion and increasing synthesis of some B vitamins.
Digestive Enzymes are specialized proteins which aid the body’s ability to breakdown proteins, fats and carbohydrates found in food. By digesting food into small proteins/ amino acids, fatty acids and small sugars, enzymes allow for proper absorption, delivery and assimilation of these essential nutrients. Digestive enzymes are produced in the body primarily by the pancreas but are also supplied by eating raw or lightly steamed vegetables and fruits. However, exposing food to heat in excess of 118* F (ie: cooking, pasteurization, microwaving and canning) destroys food-based enzymes putting an increased burden for digestion on the pancreas which ultimately leads to a failure to digest foods adequately enough to allow for proper absorption. With the development of an enzyme deficiency, multiple health problems can develop or become aggravated. These include bloating, indigestion, various inflammatory processes, allergies, asthma and certain vitamin deficiencies.
Supplements with a broad-spectrum of digestive enzymes or by eating more raw foods or only lightly steamed produce aids in supporting proper digestion and healing.
Essential Fatty Acids are as the name implies; essential to life. These are naturally-occurring fats/ oils present in animals and plants. Though there are traditionally only two truly essential fatty acids, there are many outside influences on our metabolism that make the conversion of these two fats to the dozens of other fats needed by the body, very inefficient. This creates “functional deficiencies” and is why it is generally recommended that you take a balanced complex of fatty acids which help to “fill in the gaps” made by these chemical disrupters. Typically, a diet or supplement that provides a ratio of (1 omega-3 to 2 omega-6) or as much as (1 omega-3 to 4 omega-6) is considered very health- promoting. Omega-3 fats are usually derived from fish for use in supplements but are also found in other meats and eggs (These beneficial fats are found in higher quantity in grass-fed and organic animals than in commercially-raised animals). Plant sources for omega-3 fats include flax, walnuts and to a much lesser extent, green-leafy vegetables. Omega-6 fats are derived from such sources as flax, borage, primrose, sunflower, safflower, nuts and seeds.
A Brief Word Regarding Saturated Fats
The heart muscle derives approximately 70% of its energy from fatty acids, not carbohydrates. Fatty acids also provide the longest-lasting energy source for the muscles. The most important fact to note is that these fatty acids must be naturally-occurring. The human body does not have the capacity to properly metabolize processed (hydrogenated) fatty acids.
Toxicity
Chemical compounds are ubiquitous in our food, air and water and are now found in every person. The build-up, or bioaccumulation, of these compounds in some individuals can lead to a variety of metabolic and systemic dysfunctions and in some cases, outright disease. The primary classes of the most influential toxic offenders are heavy metals (lead, mercury, aluminum, cadmium, etc.), pesticides and herbicides and synthetic (carbon-based) compounds.
These compounds that create health problems can be in a variety of common products, such as plastics, rubber, glue, paint, auto and industrial exhaust, carpet and furniture, cleaning agents, drinking water, the food chain, and so on.
Some of the more hidden or misunderstood toxins in the food we eat on a daily basis include:
MSG or monosodium glutamate- a flavor enhancer most associated with Chinese food but is also found in virtually all sauces , dips, salad dressings, breaded foods and processed or packaged foods. MSG is also known as soy protein isolate, protein isolate, hydrolyzed soy protein, autolyzed yeast, sodium or calcium caseinate or yeast extract. MSG is classified as a neuro excitotoxin. Its primary deleterious effects are on the delicate nervous tissues; overly exciting the electrical activity between nerve cells and ultimately killing these cells. Another aspect to MSG is its glycemic effect. Food containing MSG results in a three-fold increase in insulin production over the same food without it. Insulin production should be minimized to maintain low amounts of body fat and triglycerides and to reduce the severity of diabetes and hypoglycemia. MSG, therefore, makes you three times fatter than eating food without it.
Aspartame (Nutrasweet) was first introduced over 40 years ago only to find itself being denied access to the public by the FDA due its highly toxic effects. But as is the case so often with politics, enough influence was hoisted upon the powers- that- be to grant FDA approval for this toxic compound which breaks down into formaldehyde once it reaches a temperature of 86* F. By the way, what is the normal human body temperature?
Food Colorings and Preservatives make our foods look pretty and have long shelf-life but both are treated as toxic substances by our body; that is, they offer no redeeming value for our metabolism and are therefore isolated and excreted. These compounds compromise our natural healing response and aggravate underlying behavioral and physical compromises.
Animal products derived from animals that are not wild or raised as “organic” or “free ranged” provide both toxic compounds to our diets and unhealthful fats. Farm-raised fish also falls into this category as does wild fish from many inland lakes and rivers and many warm water saltwater species.
Hydrogenated vegetable oils and trans-fatty acids are manmade fats found in virtually all baked goods, soups, and pre-packaged “foods”. Both disrupt normal sugar metabolism, healing responses, inflammatory responses and energy production.
Insulin and the Glycemic Index
As we continue to eat our typical American diets, high in carbohydrates and manmade fats, we begin to cause alterations in the way our bodies perceive and regulate blood sugar and healthy fats. Due to this unbalanced intake, our cells begin to resist the signal from insulin which tells the cells to absorb our dietary sugars.
As a result of this insulin resistance, our pancreas must produce ever-increasing amounts of insulin in order to have the desired results of lowering blood sugar. Large numbers of Americans are believed to be insulin resistant, including everyone who is obese, diabetic or has high blood pressure.
This problem of insulin resistance has led to the development of what has been coined “The Glycemic Index”. The glycemic index, or GI for short, ranks foods according to the rate at which the blood sugar rises and the subsequent amount of insulin the pancreas must produce when that food is eaten. “High glycemic foods”, therefore, are less desirable than “low glycemic foods”.
Though sugars are not necessarily “toxic”, their effects can be.
Choosing foods low on the Glycemic Index will then reduce both the need for insulin as well as the detrimental changes to our metabolism as a result of insulin resistance.
Insulin directs the carbohydrates (sugars and starches) we eat into three pathways.
First: your cells will utilize (burn) a small amount of sugars as is needed at that moment
Second: cells store some as a form of starch in the muscles and liver
Third: insulin stimulates the remainder of carbohydrates to be converted into fat for storage. In this form, we store and hold onto these excess fats for a “rainy day”; that is, times of fasting, prolonged exertion or starvation. In our society, however, that “rainy day” seldom, if ever comes.
Choosing foods with a low glycemic value while keeping total carbohydrates as low as possible produces the most dramatic and positive influence on weight loss, triglycerides, blood sugar and ultimately- health.
The Glycemic Index Chart is included at the end of this book.
Detoxification
Though there is a large body of evidence demonstrating the presence of and the potential health effects of chemical and heavy metal toxicities, in the U.S., very little effort has gone into examining how to remove these compounds from the body.
The answer our bodies have to this dilemma is simple: detoxification. This is the process by which toxins are isolated, mobilized and excreted from within to allow for a return to metabolic balance. This process is often overwhelmed by the sheer amount of exposures we encounter, leading to residual toxins being deposited in connective tissues and organs. As a consequence, the passage of nutrients and waste in and out of the cell and the maintenance of our cells’ normal biological terrain becomes compromised as does our energy production, vitality and healing capacity.
Traditionally, methods employed by natural physicians to correct this problem were directed towards utilizing specific nutrients and plant extracts to support and augment the three phases of detoxification- isolating, mobilizing and excreting the toxin. To isolate a toxin requires substances which have the capacity to bind to a specific toxin. Mobilizing that toxin simply means that the now-bound compound must be transported to an area of elimination; the liver/ bowel, the kidneys/ urine, the sweat glands or the respiratory system where the toxic compound is ultimately excreted.
Physical Influences on Healing and Health
Good physical/ postural health allows the body to pass through the healing process of our resolved conflicts and traumas far more easily.
Body mechanics and the integrity of the spine are reflections of the health of the individual. Think about it; when you are sick, do you carry yourself with good posture or do you slouch and droop your head? Picture individuals you know who are in good health. In general, they have good posture. Now think about those individuals you know that are in poor health. How’s their posture? Posture is not an absolute indicator of health just as being thin doesn’t guarantee health. But the relationship between the nervous system, muscles, ligaments and bones can, and quite often does, give us a window into the functional health and vitality of the body.
Because of this relationship, posture should be thought of as being as important to one’s overall health as eating the right foods, exercising, sleeping well, and avoiding harmful substances in our food, air and water.
Without good posture, your health and vitality can become compromised. Long-term effects of poor posture can impact virtually every system in the body; digestion, breathing, pain processing, muscle strength and flexibility, accelerating the deterioration of the joints, as well as draining energy and our ability to adapt to and overcome our conflicts and traumas.
Even for younger people, how you carry yourself when working, playing or relaxing can have a substantial impact on your performance. For instance, just 15 minutes of reading or writing using incorrect posture exhausts the muscles of the neck, shoulders and upper back leading to headaches, neck pain and poor concentration and focus.
The human body, like a machine, is subject to balance, rhythm, timing and coordinated actions of all its components. For this reason, correct posture enables the body to function in a highly efficient state, performing all of its activities of daily living.
Strategies enlisted to support our musculoskeletal system enhance our healing capacity and bolster our vitality. This is the role of chiropractic care; to correct misalignment of the skeletal system thus enabling proper communication between the various body components with the nervous system.
In addition to chiropractic care, physical exercise of any kind, should be performed on a consistent basis. A good exercise program should incorporate muscle strengthening along with increasing flexibility and endurance in order to be to be considered adequate.
Rehabilitating old injuries and surgeries to one’s fullest functional capacity is encouraged as well.
Sleep
We all know that adequate amounts of sleep are essential to repair and rejuvenate. But sleep is adversely influenced by being in an “actively conflicted” state; that is in a state where we are presently dealing with an unresolved conflict or trauma.
The overall state of our nervous system is controlled by a portion of the brain called the autonomic nervous system. This control system has influence over virtually ever mechanism in the body. The “autonomic tone” of the brain helps our body adapt to and recover from conflicts and traumas; both emotional as well as physical.
While we are “actively conflicted”, our nervous system’s heightened state of self-preservation makes sleeping very difficult. Once the conflict is resolved, however, sleep becomes a priority and we can generally get a high-quality nights rest at this point.
The longer we remain in an “actively conflicted” state, the greater the insult onto our body. We all know what this is like. When we are anxious about a future event, like a test at school or an interview for a new job, we tend to obsess over that event- leading to poor sleep until we finally take the test or have the interview. The completion of these events will then lead you into resolution allowing for proper sleep to return.
While you are still in the active state and are unable to sleep well, it is advisable to employ techniques to help you sleep, though these should be viewed strictly as temporary relief until the foundational work of conflict resolution can be performed.
These may include the aforementioned brainwave entrainment, herbal or nutritional sleep aids or herbal adaptogens; plant extracts that support the body’s efforts of adapting to and overcoming the physical effects of stress.
In Closing
We were divinely designed with an innate intelligence within us to help us adapt to and overcome life’s many struggles and challenges. We were not designed inherently flawed; forced to suffer and live in fear.
When we begin to recognize and confront our views toward ourselves and those whom we encounter in life, while incorporating wise choices regarding our diet and how we take care of our bodies, we can then begin to heal and grow as human beings.
I wish above all things that you Prosper and Be In Health…

Testimonials
A 33 year old woman unable to become pregnant and suffering with recurring bladder infections. It was revealed that she had lost her mother 8 years prior and due to her inability to conceive felt as though she was unable to “establish her territory” (fulfill her motherly instincts). Once she became aware of these conflicts, she began to resolve them using some of the techniques discussed here. Within one month, she became pregnant and on her way to fulfilling her biological desire to become a mother.
A 52 year old man with a mass on his back and chronic knee pain. This truly gentle man was constantly being up-staged and verbally attacked by his older brother as a child. His brother excelled at sports (which was very important to their father). As a result, he felt completely devalued in regards to his sports performance leading to his knee problem and had this mass on his back from the constant attacks on his integrity by his brother and father. Within the first month of therapy, the mass on his back swelled dramatically until it finally opened and drained; ending with it healing over completely. As for his knee pain, this too is greatly diminished.
An 11 year old boy wakes up with “hayfever” with swollen, red eyes. As it turns out, that evening, the boy was to have his orientation into his new school. He was no longer the “big fish” in his elementary school and wasn’t looking forward to his new school. Once we discussed this situation and found reasons to look forward to his new adventure, the next day he arose to no allergies.
A 41 year old man with seizures suffered since childhood. At the age of 8, this man was forced to undergo tonsillectomy which at the time created tremendous fear. With much physical fighting against the nurses and doctors to avoid the injection of anesthesia, this child was forcibly restrained with leather restraints to his wrists and ankles. He awoke to find his wrists and ankles bloodied from attempting to escape. As with all “motor neuron” disorders (seizures, strokes, M.S.), this seizure disorder was rooted in this child’s inability to escape a highly traumatic event. As is the case with all conflict-based disease, the longer the conflict goes unresolved, the longer it will take to fully heal. To date, this individual is enjoying far less seizure activity while continuing to employ the various techniques discussed here to aid in the complete resolution of this traumatic event.
These are only a few examples of the powerful potential granted us when we choose to accept and confront our pain and suffering.
